A New Postage Stamp to Commemorate Duke M.K. Oginskis

This year, marking 250th anniversary of a composer, diplomat and an active culture figure duke Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis, Lithuania Post released a new postage stamp on September 26. 

The postage stamp depicting M.K. Oginskis' portrait and a notes motif recorded on a stave of his well-known polonaise Atsisveikinimas su tėvyne (A Farewell to the Homeland) (a-moll No. 13) in the background, was created by an artist Domantas Vildžiūnas. The stamp was released in the edition of 200 000 copies with a nominal value of EUR 0.81.

Along with the stamp, the first day cover was released. On September 26, correspondence paid by the new stamp was marked by the first day cancellation at Vilnius Main Post Office.

“We have to be proud, that worldwide known M. K. Oginskis is related to Lithuania. I have no doubt that letters sent abroad from Lithuania with the stamp dedicated to M. K. Oginskis on them, will spread this fact all over the world even more”, the Head of Philatelic Department of Lithuania Post Ervinas Vaišnoras said. 

Parliament marked year 2015 as a year of M. K. Oginskis, whereas, UNESCO and member states included M. K. Oginskis 250th anniversary into the list of dates important to the world culture, education, science and historical memory.

Descended from the Oginski family of Lithuanian dukes M. K. Oginskis (1765-1833) – was an extraordinary and particularly talented personality of 18th – 19th centuries. He was an active public figure, diplomat of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, emigre, honorary member of the Scientific Board of Vilnius University, stalwart of social reform ideas, memoir writer and composer. Nowadays, M. K. Oginskis is mostly known as a composer, the author of Europe-famous  mazurkas, marches, minuets, waltzes and polonaises, particularly Atsisveikinimas su tėvyne (A Farewell to the Homeland). To Serve the Homeland – that was M. K. Oginskis' life motto.
