The Stamp to Remind about the Nation's Striving for Freedom

Lithuania Post has released the postage stamp in memory of 25th anniversary of the tragic events of January 13th. The stamp will appear in circulation on the eve of Freedom Defenders' Day, 12th January. 


The postage stamp “25th Anniversary of January 13th Events” was created by the painter Domantas Vildžiūnas. The new stamp will be released with the nominal value of EUR 0.45 and in the edition of 300 thousand copies.

“This postage stamp is being released on the eve of 13th January, exactly at the time when 25 years ago unarmed but united Lithuanian people managed to defend freedom and independence of their country being fearless to sacrifice themselves. Soon the stamp will be spread all over the world and it will remind again that the aspiration for freedom and the spirit of unity of even a small nation are able to unite people for big achievements,” the Head of Philatelic Department of Lithuania Post Ervinas Vaišnoras said.

Along with the new stamp, the first day cover will be released. On Tuesday, 12th January  correspondence paid by the new stamp will be marked by the first day cancellation at Vilnius Main Post Office.

In the beginning of January 1991 in Lithuania, Soviet Union troops armed with heavy military equipment attempted coup d'etat. Paratroopers brutally seized Vilnius Television Tower and Lithuanian radio and television center, moreover, planned attacking the building of then Supreme Council (now Lithuanian Parliament), that were protected by thousands of peaceful Lithuanian protesters. At the TV Tower some protesters became victims as the troopers went through the crowd of civilians by tanks and were shooting at them. During this peaceful Lithuanian citizens' resistance against the Soviet troops, in total 14 peaceful civilian freedom defenders lost their lives and more than thousand got wounded.

13th January is commemorated as the Freedom Defenders' Day.
