Unexpected Suggestions for the Themes of Postage Stamps

Apr 16, 2014

It became a tradition that at the beginning of the year Lithuania Post is inviting residents to give their suggestions on the themes for the postage stamps of the next year. After almost two months open for registration of themes Lithuania Post has received really diverse and unexpected suggestions.

“One of our main expectations is to involve as many people as possible into the stamp design process. We are glad that year by year our initiative receives a growing attention from the public. This year we have received suggestions on really interesting and unexpected themes such as graffiti, fluxus movement and art by Jurgis Mačiūnas, Street Music Day or commemoration of M. K. Čiurlionis‘ paintings,“ Head of Philatelic Department of Lithuania Post Ervinas Vaišnoras said.

According to Mr Vaišnoras, citizens are following the events in Lithuania and the world, and this reflects in the suggested themes. For instance, the most popular suggestion made last year was an offer to honour the Olympic champion Rūta Meilutytė.

Introduction of euro, 250th anniversary of Mykolas Kleopas Oginskis, Lithuanian satellites in cosmos, 25th  anniversary of restoration of independence of Lithuania, presidents of Lithuania are the themes mentioned most often this year.

Citizens could give their suggestions on the themes for postage stamps until the 30th of March on the website of Lithuania Post at www.post.lt. Should the offered theme is really original Lithuania Post will issue a stamp reflecting the theme, and the author of the theme will be awarded a prize.

The themes of postage stamps are selected by the Stamp Issuance Commission consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communication and Lithuania Post, artists, historians, and professionals of other areas.

In the course of a year, Lithuania Post issues on average 25-30 postage stamps. Lithuania Post also provides courier, logistics, and financial intermediation services.
